Working with Parts
Quick reference. Keyboard shortcuts, what each surface does, and how to get a song from blank to shareable.
The wheel — eight dimensions
Each spoke is a dimension of the song. Click any to enter; ← → to navigate.
- Theme — what the song is, who’s speaking, where it’s set, what concrete vessel carries the emotion.
- Harmony — chord progression and what it wants to do.
- Melody — the lead voices and what each is for.
- Rhythm — key + tempo and what the tempo is doing.
- Lyrics — freewrite → genesis line → chorus → test, plus verses + title.
- Instrumentation — element grid: which voices play in which section.
- Arrangement — energy curve, where the peak lands.
- Production — sonic finish: aesthetic, references, signal-chain notes.
The coach
Every spoke has a coach panel. Type what you’ve written, hit Ask the coach, get two short sentences back — mirror + better question, never composes for you. Ask in your own words for specific custom questions.
Coach memory persists per song — see all turns in one place at Songs → song → Coach memory.
Playback & recording
The Playback panel loops the song frame (chord pad + kick + hi-hat + bass) at your key/tempo/progression. Sing over it; hit Listen through to hear the full arrangement form.
Takes record from your mic into IndexedDB on this device. Each take stores the loop snapshot it was sung against. Mix down renders take + loop to a WAV. Play with loop plays a take while the loop runs.
Lyric craft tools
Beneath chorus + verse drafts, the analyzer reads for craft:
- Empty-calorie words — Seidman’s "really / just / thing" — words to cut or replace.
- Clichés — flagged against the pack’s blocklist + a standard list.
- Rhyme types — Pattison classification: perfect / family / additive / subtractive / assonance / consonance.
The Object Writing panel (in Lyrics → Freewrite) runs 90-second timed Pattison exercises per sense and merges the output into your freewrite.
Snapshots & history
Every change appends a revision after 8 seconds of quiet. S takes a labelled snapshot you can restore later. History panel on the left rail lists every saved revision plus your snapshots.
Sharing
The Share panel publishes a redacted snapshot of the song to a public URL like app.parts.fm/s/abcdefg. Only the public-safe fields ship — title, intention, theme, lyrics, production aesthetic. Takes, coach conversations and private notes stay private.
Export
Three paths off the wheel:
- Read view — a printable / shareable plain-language brief of the song.
- Multi-track MIDI — one .mid file with named tracks: Chords / Bass / Kick / Hi-hat / Shaker. Drag into any DAW.
- Full bundle — per-section MIDI clips + project JSON + rich README (includes theme, intention, lyrics, takes, plugin recommendations).
.als (Ableton) and .dawproject (Bitwig / Reaper / Studio One) exports are on the Pro tier — the universal MIDI bundle covers every DAW today.
